Anthony Volpe's dad going at it with a Mets fan who was talking smack about his son
Main Post: Anthony Volpe's dad going at it with a Mets fan who was talking smack about his son
Top Comment: This guy was a regular caller into WFAN, if you need to know the type of dude he is. edit: Sorry, Volpe's dad, used to (maybe even still does?) call in to WFAN in like the early-mid 2000s.

Nice play from Fried
Main Post: Nice play from Fried
Top Comment: Max Fried heard someone say "Pitchers aren't athletes" and took that personally.
Johnnie Bryant
Main Post:
Right after Thibs was fired, everyone was talking about Johnnie Bryant. Then, his name went away, and no one talked about him again. I don't even recall him interviewing. What happened?
Top Comment: The people that were talking about him were fans on Reddit/twitter. All the beat reporters and people close to the team shot down that he was a candidate immediately. They didn’t want to go with a first time HC.

Top Comment: Big series in Toronto this week. We could finish this matchup anywhere from 7 games up on the Blue Jays to 1 game behind them in the standings. Pitching Matchups/Scouting Report vs. the Blue Jays (Mon) Carlos Rodon vs. Max Scherzer (Tue) Max Fried vs. Kevin Gausman (Wed) Will Warren vs. Jose Berrios (Thu) Clarke Schmidt vs. Chris Bassitt Rotation Tonight, future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer will make his third start in Toronto uniform. He's been sidelined for most of the season with right thumb inflammation. The 40-year-old has had trouble staying healthy lately. In addition to the thumb issue, he's missed time due to a hamstring strain, shoulder fatigue, and back surgery since the beginning of last season. Scherzer has a 3.88 ERA/4.37 FIP since 2023, so he's closer to OK than elite nowadays. Still, you never know when an old dog will throw out a great performance. Scherzer has faced the Yankees 12 times over the years with a 4.25 ERA. Giancarlo Stanton (4 HR in 26 PA) hits him especially hard. Kevin Gausman is having a mixed season in 2025. He's had several excellent starts and several meltdowns, resulting in mediocre overall numbers (4.21 ERA/3.82 xERA). He's got a healthy strikeout rate (23.9%) and excellent walk rate (6.6%), but he's prone to giving up hard-hit balls. As always, Gausman is a fastball-splitter guy, and that splitter is one of the highest-graded pitches in the game. Outside of Justin Verlander, no active pitcher has faced the Yankees more often than Gausman. He has a 3.88 ERA against them over the equivalent of a full season (176.1 IP). The Yankees slapped Gausman around (2.2 IP, 6 R) back in April. Aaron Judge (.829 SLG in 52 PA) is especially excited to see him. Jose Berrios is pitching to a 3.26 ERA through 17 starts this year. That would be the lowest ERA of his career, if he can maintain it. His 102.0 IP is 7th in the AL. Berrios is also on a crazy hot streak, allowing 0 or 1 run in five of his last six starts. But Statcast doesn't really buy into Berrios' resurgence, as he still grades out below average in strikeouts, walks, ground balls, and barrels. His xERA (4.56) is right in line with his previous few seasons. Berrios has a 4.89 ERA in 15 career starts against the Yankees, though he was solid against them back in April (5.1 IP, 0 R). Once again, Aaron Judge (.743 SLG in 41 PA) is excited for this matchup. Veteran Chris Bassitt is having a quality season, though his last outing (a disaster in Boston) has spiked his ERA. As usual, Bassitt is doing an excellent job limiting high exit velocity and keeping the ball on the ground. He also limits walks and maintains a respectable strikeout rate. Bassitt doesn't throw hard but still gets good results from his fastballs. The 36-year-old has thrown eight different pitch types this season, but he's gotten his best results from the cutter and curveball. Bassitt has 8 career starts against the Yankees with a 1.63 ERA. Bullpen The Jays pen ranks 11th in ERA (3.65) and 13th in FIP (3.78) for an overall mediocre grade. But that's a huge upgrade from last season, when they were arguably the worst unit in baseball. Interestingly, the Jays big relief acquisition this winter has not lived up to expectations. The Jays gave RHP Jeff Hoffman a 3-yr/$33M contract in January. And while he started the season well — 1.17 ERA through the end of April, he's struggled mightily since. He's pitched to an 8.05 ERA/6.72 FIP in May and June with 4 blown saves. Hoffman still has elite strikeout and whiff rates with plus velocity. But he's been susceptible to hard-hit balls. He's already allowed more home runs that he did all of last season. Jays manager John Schneider has relied on RHP Yariel Rodríguez (2.66 ERA), LHP Brendon Little (1.93 ERA), LHP Mason Fluharty (5.35 ERA), and old pal RHP Chad Green (4.24 ERA) for the bulk of relief innings. Recently, RHP Braydon Fisher (2.05 ERA) — who was acquired from the Dodgers last year for Cavan Biggio — has come on strong. Also on the roster are RHP Nick Sandlin (2.13 ERA) and LHP Justin Bruihl (2.2 IP, 0 R). Offense The Jays are scoring 4.4 runs per game this year, which is right around league average. Their team 104 wRC+ reflects that status. But it should be pointed out that the Jays lineup has been steadily improving. Since May 8, the Jays have scored 238 runs, 4th in baseball. The Toronto lineup is carried by 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (137 wRC+), who received a $500M contract from the team this winter. Veteran RF/DH George Springer (132 wRC+) is having a bounceback season, while the catching tandem of Alejandro Kirk (126 wRC+) and Tyler Heineman (158 wRC+) is one of the most productive in baseball. Sophomore 3B/RF Addison Barger (124 wRC+) has picked it up after a slow start. Rochester-native 2B/3B Ernie Clement (115 wRC+), SS Bo Bichette (106 wRC+), and OF Nathan Lukes (105 wRC+) are having good-to-OK seasons at the plate. Towards the bottom of the lineup, Toronto has LF Davis Schneider (88 wRC+), CF Myles Straw (72 wRC+), Platinum Glove-winner 2B Andrés Giménez (68 wRC+), LF Jonatan Clase (67 wRC+), and UTIL Will Wagner (54 wRC+). Not a lot of production from those bats. Big offseason add RF Anthony Santander (64 wRC+) is on the IL with shoulder inflammation. The Jays are a below-average baserunning team, with Giménez and Straw as the best runners. Kirk (-4.5 BsR) is the second-worst baserunner in baseball. Defense The Blue Jays are an excellent defensive unit, with 39 DRS (4th) and 18 OAA (t-3rd). Giménez is elite at second base, Clement is phenomenal at third base, Straw and Daulton Varsho (on the IL) are among the best in center field, Kirk and Heineman are excellent behind the plate, and even Guerrero has received good grades at first base. Springer in right field and Bichette at shortstop are the weak spots. Overall On paper the Jays are not that impressive. They've scored 365 runs (15th) and allowed 369 runs (11th), for a run differential of -4. Their Pythagorean record is just 41-42. Everything about this team seems mediocre to me, aside from their excellent defense. But the Jays have been playing much better baseball lately. Since their season low-point on May 7, they're 29-18 (.617) with a +35 run differential. They're currently holding the second AL Wild Card spot, and they've been especially good at the Rogers Centre this year. I think they're a team to take seriously right now, even if I'm not confident their pitching will hold up in the second half.
